DATEV Meine Steuern: Inbox

Guide to the Inbox in DATEV Meine Steuern. View documents and tax assessment notices, check the accuracy of your tax assessment, download and store documents, and use notifications.Share

Introduction

The Inbox is the section in DATEV Meine Steuern where you receive documents from us. Whilst you use the other sections to submit supporting documents and details, the Inbox works in the opposite direction: this is where we provide you with documents.

These include, above all, your completed tax return and, later, your tax assessment notice. You can view the documents online and download them as required.

First, a clarification, as the Inbox is sometimes confused with the document upload feature\_

You do not upload anything to the Inbox – you’ll find there what we provide for you. The ‘Tax-Relevant Documents’ section is where you upload your supporting documents \[Link zu einem Hilfsartikel\].

This article explains what you’ll find in your inbox, how to view your tax assessment notice, and how to download and store documents.

In DATEV Meine Steuern, you’ll find the Inbox in the top left-hand corner. The Inbox is the place in DATEV Meine Steuern where you receive documents from us. Whilst you use the other sections – such as Income Tax, Receipts and Providing Details – to submit information, the Inbox works in the opposite direction. This is where we make documents available to you. These include, first and foremost, your completed tax return and, later on, your tax assessment notice. You can view the documents directly here online and download them if required. You do not upload anything to the Inbox. You will find there what we provide for you. This article explains what you will find in the Inbox, how to view your tax assessment notice, and how to download and store the documents.

What you’ll find in your inbox

Your inbox contains the documents we make available to you via the portal. Typical examples include:

  • the completed tax return
  • the tax assessment notice from the tax office
  • individual reports or letters that we make available to you

This means you have all your documents in one place, rather than having to hunt them down in emails or on paper.

If you have any questions about the content of your tax assessment notice – for example, regarding any discrepancies with your tax return – please contact us.

The tax assessment – a first look

Once you have received your tax assessment notice, it is worth carrying out a quick comparison. Three points are particularly useful: the tax assessed, any refund or additional payment shown, and any discrepancies compared with the tax return you submitted.

The tax office explains in the notice how it arrived at its calculations. If an item differs from your tax return, you will find the reason for this in the explanations provided.

You can lodge an appeal against a tax assessment notice within one month of it being issued. If you notice a discrepancy or anything is unclear, please contact us at an early stage so that the deadline does not pass.

Download and keep documents

You should download the documents provided and save them for your own records, for example, for your personal files or for submission to third parties such as a bank.

Do not rely on documents remaining available on the portal indefinitely. Download important documents, such as your tax assessment notice, and keep a copy on your own system as well.

Notifications for new documents

We can notify you when new documents are made available, so you do not need to check regularly. For this to work, your email address must be up to date.

An out-of-date address means the notification will not reach you and you may not notice a new document until it is too late.

Common sources of error

  • Wrong tax year selected: The notice you are looking for is in the inbox for the relevant year. It will not appear in the wrong tax year.
  • Document viewed online only, not saved: If you only view the notice on the portal, you will not have your own copy. It is advisable to have a saved copy for deadlines and evidence.
  • Out-of-date email address: Notifications about new documents do not arrive. As a result, a new tax assessment goes unnoticed.
  • Inbox confused with document upload: You cannot upload documents to the inbox. The ‘Tax-related documents’ section is intended for this purpose.
  • Missing the deadline after receiving the notice: If you notice the notice too late, you’ll lose valuable time for a potential audit. Please contact us at an early stage if you have any questions.
